Study/translation activities
Translation project |
In 1959 Chögyal Namkhai Norbu accepted an invitation to work with noted Tibetologist Giuseppe Tucci, co-founder of the Italian Institute for the Middle and Extreme Orient, ISMEO, in Rome, Italy. In 1962 he took a post at the Istituto Universitario Orientale in Naples, where he taught Tibetan language and literature until 1992.
From the time of his arrival in Italy, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu focused his research mainly on the ancient history of Tibet, investigating thoroughly the indigenous Bön tradition. His books, which include works on Dzogchen, history, medicine, astrology, Bön and folk traditions, are evidence of his profound knowledge of Tibetan culture and his commitment to preserve this ancient cultural heritage. They have been acclaimed and appreciated by scholars and general readers all over the world. |
Ka-Ter project |
Until late 2018, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu was working with a team of western translators at making more and more Dzogchen teaching texts available in English. Every year more than a dozen large publications are made and sponsored by the Shang Shung Institute of Austria through the Ka-ter translation Project.
The Ka-Ter translation Project started in 2003 by the Austrian Shang Shung Institute, mainly by Oliver Leick, with the approval and inspiration of Chögyal Namkhai Norbu. The main aim of the project is the translation of ancient Tibetan texts, in particular those related to the Dzogchen Teaching, into the English language. The aim is also the translation into English of especially selected works of Chögyal Namkhai Norbu. Another crucial aspect is to translate the original texts that Chögyal Namkhai Norbu often comments upon in his Teaching activities and to promote the knowledge of the Tibetan Language. |
Translator’s Training |
To support the future of these translation activities, and for the sake of people interested in learning the Tibetan language and translation from Tibetan, the Ka- ter project has also instituted yearly translator’s trainings. The first training took place in 2003 led by Elio Guarisco, and has continued till the present year mainly under the direction of Fabian Sanders. This year we will have the 12th training.
